This hormonal disorder gets its name from the many cysts that build up inside the ovaries. The many cysts in a polycystic ovary are eggs that matured but, due to abnormal hormone levels, were never released.

PCOS has several features:
*Skin and Hair changes due to the action of testosterone; oily skin and acne, hirsutism (increased facial and body hair), and androgenic alopecia (female hair loss).
*Changes in the menstrual cycles and fertility due to hormone changes inside the ovary
*Difficulty controlling weight.
*Shifts in metabolism, insulin resistance/diabetes and unfavorable cholesterol changes.
*Emotional Stress of dealing with the above physical and metabolic changes.

PCOS is something of a mystery- it is not well known yet what causes it or the best way to treat it. For many years, many physicians have dismissed PCOS as a “cosmetic” problem, or one that interfered only with a woman’s ability to get pregnant- we know now it affects more than reproduction.

Your doctor is the first help. He or she may then refer you to a gynecologist or an endocrinologist. PCOS is manageable. A simple history taking, ultrasound and hormone blood tests provide the answer to best treatment.

In our clinic we are professionals who are educated to recognize and assist clients who have PCOS. We are aware of how emotionally devastating it can be and are sympathetic to our clients’ needs and concerns.
