Electrolysis: The Perfect Finishing touch to Laser Hair Removal

February 1st, 2012

Laser Hair Removal limitation

Like electrolysis, laser removes unwanted hair on legs, arms chin, most everywhere. Because the laser beam is attracted by the melanin (pigment) of the hair, it limits itself to mostly light skin with dark terminal hairs for best results. A person with darker complexion may account situations where the laser beam may heat too much of the skin as it would do for dark terminal hair.

Risks: By Mayo Clinic Staff

Laser hair removal does not guarantee permanent hair removal. Some hair may be resistant to the laser treatment or may grow again after treatment — although the new hair growth may be finer and lighter in color. The most common side effects of laser hair removal include:

Skin irritation. Temporary irritation, crusting or scabbing is possible after laser hair removal.

Pigment changes. Laser hair removal may darken or lighten the affected skin, usually temporarily. Skin lightening primarily affects those who have darker skin, especially if an incorrect laser is used at an incorrect setting.

Rarely, laser hair removal may cause blistering, scarring or other changes in skin texture.

If you’re interested in laser hair removal, choose a doctor who’s board certified in a specialty such as dermatology or cosmetic surgery and has experience with laser hair removal. If a physician’s assistant or licensed nurse will do the procedure, make sure the doctor supervises and is available on-site during the treatments. At Hairless NYC Clinic Inc., often times we encounter clients, whose needs have not been met with several sessions of laser, for reasons mentioned above, or for other motives.

This is why Electrolysis is the perfect Finishing Touch to any laser treatment – it will Terminate that growth from everywhere on the body and face without any limitation of skin tone and hair type.

What the FDA has to say on Permanent Hair Removal

1/ FDA Consumer Health Information /U.S. Food and Drug Administration   June 2010

Removing Hair Safely

FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health regulates electrolysis equipment and lasers. Chemicals, depilatories, waxes,  shaving creams and gels fall under the jurisdiction of FDA’s Office of Cosmetics and Colors in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The practice of professional hair removal is generally regulated by state and local authorities. Here are some tips related to common methods of hair removal.

Laser Hair Removal

In this method, a laser destroys hair follicles with heat.

Sometimes it is recommended that a topical anesthetic product be used before a laser hair removal procedure, to minimize pain. In these cases, FDA recommends that consumers discuss with a medical professional the circumstances under which the cream should be used, and whether the use is appropriate.

Those who decide to use a skin-numbing product should follow the directions of a health care provider and consider using a product that contains the lowest amount of anesthetic drugs possible. FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has received reports of serious and life-threatening side effects after use of large amounts of skin-numbing products for laser hair removal.

Side effects of laser hair removal can include blistering, discoloration after treatment, swelling, redness, and scarring. Sunlight should be avoided during healing after the procedure.

Epilators: Needle, Electrolysis, and Tweezers

Needle epilators introduce a fine wire close to the hair shaft, under the skin, and into the hair follicle. An electric current travels down the wire and destroys the hair root at the bottom of the follicle, and the loosened hair is removed with tweezers.

Medical electrolysis devices destroy hair growth with a shortwave radio frequency after a thin probe is placed in the hair follicle. Risks from these methods include infection from an unsterile needle and scarring from improper technique.

Electrolysis is considered a permanent hair removal method, since it destroys the hair follicle. It requires a series of appointments over a period of time.

New York Electrologists Conference (NYEA)

November 30th, 2011

It was a beautiful sunny day in many ways – driving up to Tarrytown NY, on an early Sunday morning with Lia and Xenia, Tati met us there. A real joy to reconnect with old and new colleagues exchanging tips or recapturing memories, catching up on the buzz – a real benefit from the industry events.

We all know that conditioning our self or management care in office place is the key to eliminate the stress of every day’s demands. Thus, minimal aches and pains due to muscle spasm or foot cramps or carpel syndrome, allowed us to best focus on performance with every day remedies techniques.

Regular topics such as infection control and sterilization are perhaps common knowledge – so is proper hygiene. Yet, diseases are all around us and we can never be reminded enough of the simple task  of “hands washing” and proper, effective, imperative sterilization CDC (Center of Diseases Control) by laws.

Digital computerized Electrolysis equipment era comes a long way. From one tenth of a second performance to one millieme of a second or 13.5 megahertz, to now witnessing a 27 megahertz is absolutely “la crème de la crème” in terms of comfort, speed, result – Coming our way in our clinic!

Continuing education through those events is the “Who’s, What” that you should never have to ask, it is delivered to us. Being informed to inform You, our clientele is the key to our success.

Here are my associate’s comments from our November Conference.

Lia

On Sunday November 13th we participated in the annual electrology event that was held this year in Doubletree, Tarrytown. It is very imperative to be present in these seminars in order to share amongst collegues new trends in the profession. Our goal is to constantly aim in a more efficient and convenient service for both the client and the electrologist.

Xenia

NY Electrolysis Association Continuing Education Event is a once a year meeting for AEA members.

This years meeting discussed a Cause of Chronic Muscle Pain specific to the practice of Electrology. Attendees did the demonstration of self-treatment that will release the tension.

In the second part of the event attendees learned how to Customize Modalities and perform procedures which will benefit their clients in more effective treatment.

In the third part of the event attendees reviewed the “Proper Infection Control procedures.” How to keep a proper hygienic environment to minimize the risk of transmission of infectious diseases between the practitioner and the client.

The event has been helpful for Electrologists to meet and exchange their outlook on the industry. The field has been growing and expanding, it is very important to keep with the new standards and demands.

This is it – Summer is Here – so is sunburn time (Part 2)

July 11th, 2011

Fair skins having less melanin protection are more likely to burn faster, but regardless of your skin type, sun damages your DNA of skin cells – leading to skin cancer including melanoma.

We should keep in mind it doesn’t have to be painful or obviously red to benefit the sensitivity of the electrolysis session or any skin treatment for this matter – facial, body scrub – massage etc. The pre and post three days sun exposure-waiting time should apply.

A sunburn skin will dry and peel, if blister call your doctor. See blisters below.

From : http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sunburn/DS00964

Home remedies may reduce your pain and discomfort:

* Take an anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others).

*Apply cold compresses to the affected skin, or take a cool bath or shower.

*Apply an aloe vera or after-sun lotion to your skin to decrease pain and swelling.

*Apply cold compresses — such as a towel dampened with cool tap water — to the affected skin. Or take a cool bath or shower.

* Apply a moisturizing cream, aloe vera lotion or hydrocortisone cream to affected skin. A low-dose (0.5 to 1 percent) hydrocortisone cream may decrease pain and swelling, and speed up healing.

* If blisters form, don’t break them. They contain your natural body fluid (serum) and are a protective layer. Also, breaking blisters slows the healing process and increases the risk of infection. If needed, lightly cover blisters with gauze. If blisters break on their own, apply an antibacterial cream.

* Drink plenty of fluids. Sun exposure and heat can cause fluid loss through your skin. Be sure to replenish those fluids to prevent dehydration — when your body doesn’t have enough water and other fluids to carry out its normal functions.

* Treat peeling skin gently. Within a few days, the affected area may begin to peel. This is simply your body’s way of getting rid of the top layer of damaged skin. While your skin is peeling, continue to use moisturizing cream.

To prevent sunburn:

*Avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sun’s rays are the strongest during these hours, schedule outdoor activities for other times of the day. Seek shade whenever possible. limit the amount of time you’re outdoors during these peak hours.

* Cover up. Wear tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs, and a broad-brimmed hat, than does a baseball cap or golf visor. Also, consider wearing clothing or outdoor gear specially designed to provide sun protection.

* Use sunscreen frequently and liberally. The American Academy of Dermatology currently recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more. Apply sunscreen generously, and reapply every two hours — or more often if you’re swimming or perspiring. Use it even on cloudy or hazy days. UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.

* Wear sunglasses when outdoors. Look for a manufacturer’s label that says the sunglasses block 99 or 100 percent of all UV light. To be even more effective, choose sunglasses that fit close to your face or have wraparound frames that block sunlight from all angles.

I have gone to Monique for electrolysis for many years sporadically and it has made a significant difference in my life. I get many compliments and it has greatly improved my self esteem. The results have been excellent and I have never had any marks as a result of the treatments. It’s absolutely outstanding and I would and have recommended permanent removal to anyone.

Also, the staff is very professional and the office is very serene and clean.

Electrolysis and sun tan

For just as much as 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure, sunburn may take place. Red, painful, and hot to the touch even several hours later – and there it is.

Consistent sun exposure will increase chances of skin diseases and complications. The skin will become dry and therefore leads to premature appearances of wrinkles, liver spot, and possibly skin cancer, including melanoma.

Protection is key, even on cloudy day doctors tell us.

Our skin is our largest organ – it needs to be moist at all times and protected. Any part of the body can burn: ears, scalp, lips, and even our eyes can burn.

Exposure to too much ultraviolet (UV) light – a radiation is a wavelength of sunlight in a range too short for our human eye to see. It will affect the skin in excess production of melanin (dark pigment in the epidermis) – darker tan.

This is why, electrolysis can ONLY be performed on healthy skin. Electro-coagulation occurring at the procedure of hair removal will make the skin even more sensitive during treatment. Healing will take longer and subsequent scaring may take place.

Likewise, no sun-bathing should take place within a day prior or post a permanent hair removal session – but with just 3 days, it allows the skin to bounce back to normal.

From causes: by Mayo Clinic staff

Did you know that as much as 90 percent of UV rays pass through clouds? UV rays can also reflect off snow, ice, sand, water and other reflective surfaces, burning your skin as severely as direct sunlight.

Causes of Hirsutism (Part 2)

June 9th, 2011

There are several endocrine system diseases that result from disruptions in this complex system of network of organs and glands.

Diabetes – when the pancreas do not produce enough insulin or the body fail to   effectively use it.

Osteoporosis – decrease of estrogen during a women menopause or a decrease of testosterone in men aging process.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome — PCOS is a common disease of the endocrine system where it affects 7% to 10% of women between 15 to 45. Irregular menstruation or sometime rare, excess of androgen (male hormone) hirsutism, acne, difficulty to conceive.

Thyroid disorders – to much (hyperthyroidism) or to little (hypothyroidism) hormone produce by the gland, thyroid nodules, cancer are some of the disorders.

Cushing syndrome – to much cortisol in the blood for too longer time. Cortisol accounts for controlling the function of the immune system also respond to stress.

Addison disease – adrenal insufficiency. Steroid hormones help the body fight stress and infection, regulate blood sugar level, and maintain the sex drive.

Excerpts from: Annaswamy Raji, MD, M.M.Sc

http://www.hormone.org/symptoms_of_menopause.cfm

Menopause is the natural culmination of a woman’s reproductive cycle.

The ups and down that mark a gradual decrease in estrogen and progesterone production, produce the most noticeable symptoms of menopause.

Estrogen is the hormone that is primarily responsible for the changes a woman will experience during menopause, such as changes in her normal menstrual cycle patterns, hot flashes, sleep problems, vaginal dryness, mood swings, or undesirable (and often unpredictable) hair growth.

Side effects

Fluctuating estrogen levels bring a number of different changes throughout the body.

Skelekal System – bone density decline more rapidly, a risk of osteoporosis left undiagnosed or untreated – broken bones.

Cardiopulmonary System – women are at risk of heart attacks and other heart-related problems.

Nervous System — Estrogen fluctuations can also affect the emotional state. Between sadness, anger, confusion, and in some cases, anxiety or depression. Women are at an increased risk of a new episode of depression as they go through the menopause transition.

You can learn about the prevention of bone loss in a detailed overview of osteoporosis.
