Emotional stress can have a varied effect on hair growth. There can be both loss of hair and growth of excess hair depending on numerous factors that medicine does not fully understand.
The adrenal gland is the stress gland in the body. Both physical and psychological stress may increase adrenal-androgen production. As more women enter the job market and stresses involved with modern life are increased, an increase in adrenal androgens is expected. Excess amounts of androgens can pose a problem, resulting in such “virilizing effects” as acne, hirsutism (excess hair growth in unwanted places, like the chin or upper lip) and thinning hair.
These glands are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress- cortisol- which is secreted in bloodstream in higher levels during the body’s ‘ fight or flight’ response to stress and is responsible for several stress related changes in the body.
It is common for electrologists to notice excess hair on female patients going through stressful times.
Lowering your stress levels by:
*diet- eat healthy, reduce caffeine and sugar, avoid alcohol
*exercise- spend 15 minutes doing deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or even going for a short walk
* making time for fun and relaxation- listen to music, watch a comedy, call a friend, massage, take a bath, light candles, aromatherapy etc
* getting a good night’s sleep – very important to recharge, refresh and rejuvenate
will help you cope with everyday challenges and nurture yourself.
