All of us would like to believe that our inner being is unrelated to our physical appearance. What we do with our lives, who we are and what we enjoy should not be influenced by looks. Our earliest perceptions of self consist of feedback – feedback that is tied to our physical appearance. The subliminal messages and feed back from our interpersonal relationships actually alter our self image.

The statistical data amassed by sociologists and psychologists reveal that from the moment we are born, we are judged by our physical appearance. How others react to us, to our outer self does indeed effect the development of our self image. The self image dictates (in most cases) our personality and ultimately shapes our lives.

Each of us sees in the mirror what we expect to see. Poor self image goes hand in hand with low self confidence. The individual with poor self image creates psychological barriers to success. By improving physical appearance self image is improved, self consciousness is lessened, self confidence and self esteem can grow.

Understanding this, we can better understand our clients and help them effectively make changes in their outward appearance that can benefit their lives.

Dealing with unwanted hairs can sometimes make a person self conscious and less confident to face the world. Teenage years and puberty, menopause, stress, genes, some medications can cause excessive hair growth. Hirsutism (hair growth) is of cosmetic and psychological concern.

In women, hirsutism exceeding culturally normal levels can be as distressing an emotional problem as the loss of scalp hair.

As teen are coming into their own, physical changes such as unsightly hair can negatively impact body image and self-esteem. For teen girls, it could be the growth of superfluous hair on the side of the face and the upper lip. For the teen boys, it may be the emergence of thick, bulky eyebrows. Some young people feel too embarrassed to speak about their hair concerns, while others go to a parent for advice.
